Miller underwent surgery in February 2026 and will miss the tournament entirely, per both the Socceroos' official site and ESPN. Critically, Miller had started at right wing-back in every qualifier under Popovic — his absence is a structural hole, not a rotation call. Jacob Italiano of Grazer AK is expected to fill the position. Reports suggest Aiden O'Neill (NYCFC) picked up an ankle issue in early May, though as of June 7 no second publisher had confirmed severity or squad impact.

Manager and tactical setup. Popovic, who replaced Graham Arnold, has built a compact, high-pressing shape with quick vertical transitions, deploying both 3-4-2-1 and 5-4-1 variants. The right wing-back position was a key attacking outlet in qualifying, which makes Miller's absence more disruptive than a straight personnel swap.

These signal sharpness, not readiness. A squad in mid-transition, missing its first-choice wing-back, carrying 17 tournament debutants, and still finding cohesion faces a steep ask — but Ryan's experience, Souttar's set-piece threat, and Irankunda's pace mean Group D remains an open question rather than a foregone conclusion.
