Preview
With both teams holding a 1-1 record, the Patriots will travel to New York to face the Jets on Thursday night football. After another slow start in week 2, Aaron Rodgers and the Jets found their footing to come up with a big win against the Titans. The pressure will be on for Rodgers to show up for his fans in New York for the first time since his Achilles injury at the start of last season.
New England Patriots
The Patriots have been quite competitive in the season's first two weeks. New head coach Jerod Mayo has made a strong impact on the defensive side, almost completely shutting down the run game. New England has allowed just 33 points so far, which is the fifth-fewest in the league. Their opponents have averaged only 3.3 yards per carry (3rd) and totaled 116 rushing yards (2nd). The defence has also recorded six sacks and two takeaways. New England secured their first win on the road last week and are looking to start a streak in New York.
Offensively, this team relies heavily on its rushing attack, particularly on RB Rhamondre Stevenson. New England has accumulated 600 total yards (20th) and scored 36 points (20th). Stevenson accounts for one-third of both the points (12) and yards (216). The Patriots average 4.7 yards per carry and rank third in rushing attempts. However, passing could pose a challenge for the team again. Jacoby Brissett has completed 58.8% of his passes for 270 yards and one touchdown. TE Hunter Henry is the only Patriot with more than five receptions and 40 receiving yards. The Patriots can't afford to fall behind. Fortunately, they haven't committed any turnovers so far, and Brissett has only been sacked four times. We'll see if the offence can generate enough points to secure a division win.
New York Jets
The Jets have been exposed on the ground twice, allowing a total of 310 rushing yards (24th) and averaging 4.7 yards per carry (20th). This is a key factor in them conceding 49 points (25th). While the Jets performed better against the pass last week, they're still giving up 7.4 yards per attempt. Their pass rush has been a bright spot, recording seven sacks over the first two games. Additionally, New York notched their first two takeaways last Sunday. Strengthening their run defence will be crucial on Thursday, enabling their pass rush to take advantage of more favourable situations.
The team ranks 27th in total yards and 20th in yards per play. Breece Hall and the rushing attack have managed just 169 yards (26th) at an average of 3.9 yards per carry (21st). The Jets are averaging only 6.4 yards per pass attempt. On the bright side, they didn't commit any turnovers against the Titans, and Rodgers has been sacked just three times, which is crucial for his health. However, there's little indication that New York's offence will improve beyond mediocrity in 2024.
Prediction
With a strong defence holding the Pats together, expect them to cover the spread in a mid scoring game that still reaches the over!
š Point Spread: Patriots +6.5
š Total: Over 38.5
Good luck bettors!
